Beyond pho and banh mi, Da Nang has a rich and distinct local food culture. These are the ten dishes every visitor should try — and exactly where to find them.
Da Nang sits between the culinary traditions of Hue to the north and Hoi An to the south, absorbing the best of both while developing its own distinct identity. The city’s food scene is one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated — bold flavours, incredibly fresh seafood, and dishes you simply cannot find anywhere else in the world.
The Essential Ten
- Mi Quang — Da Nang’s most beloved noodle dish: turmeric-yellow noodles with pork, shrimp, peanuts and fresh herbs
- Banh Xeo — crispy rice flour crepes filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts; eaten wrapped in lettuce
- Bun Cha Ca — fish cake noodle soup unique to Da Nang, light and deeply savoury
- Nem Lui — lemongrass pork skewers, grilled over charcoal and served with rice paper for wrapping
- Banh Trang Cuon Thit Heo — thinly sliced boiled pork rolled in rice paper with green mango and herbs
- Com Ga Hoi An — Hoi An chicken rice, fragrant with turmeric and served with a sharp ginger sauce
- Cao Lau — thick noodles with char siu pork, only found in Hoi An, made with water from a specific local well
- Grilled Seafood (Hai San Nuong) — fresh-off-the-boat clams, prawns, and squid grilled with spring onion oil
- Banh Mi Da Nang — the local version uses a crispier baguette and a specific house-made pate
- Sinh To Bo — Vietnamese avocado smoothie with condensed milk; the perfect afternoon snack
Local Tip
Sue’s Tip: The best Mi Quang I have ever tasted is served at a small open-air spot on Bach Dang Street that opens only from 6 AM to 10 AM. If you are an early riser, tell me and we will go there first.
