How to Do the Perfect Hue Day Trip from Da Nang

The former imperial capital of Vietnam is just two hours from Da Nang — and it rewards those who give it a full day. Here is exactly how to spend it.

Hue served as the imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 under the Nguyen dynasty. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage city of extraordinary depth — royal tombs, pagodas, moat-ringed fortresses, and a cuisine that is arguably Vietnam’s most refined. It deserves at least a full day, ideally two.

Getting There: The Hai Van Pass

The drive from Da Nang to Hue over the Hai Van Pass is one of the most spectacular road journeys in Southeast Asia. The pass climbs through jungle-covered mountains with sweeping ocean views on both sides. Plan to stop at the summit fortifications — the views from there are unforgettable.

Local Tip

Sue’s Tip: Allow an extra 30 minutes for the Hai Van Pass stop. I know the best viewpoint where you can get a clear shot of both Da Nang Bay to the south and Lang Co Lagoon to the north simultaneously.

Must-See in Hue

  • The Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi) — a vast 10 km² walled fortress complex
  • The Forbidden Purple City inside the Citadel — once reserved only for the Emperor
  • Thien Mu Pagoda — a 7-storey tower overlooking the Perfume River
  • Tu Duc Royal Tomb — the most romantic and elaborate of all the imperial tombs
  • Dong Ba Market — the best place to sample Hue street food
  • Bun Bo Hue — the city’s signature spicy beef noodle soup
