From the lantern-lit Ancient Town to hidden tailor shops and the best local bowls of Cao Lau — here is everything a first-time visitor needs before stepping into Hoi An.
Hoi An is one of those rare places that feels exactly as magical in real life as it does in photos. The Ancient Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a beautifully preserved trading port from the 15th century, and walking its narrow yellow-walled lanes feels like stepping back in time.
Getting There from Da Nang
Hoi An is just 30 km south of Da Nang — about 45 minutes by private car. I recommend leaving Da Nang by 8:00 AM to beat the midday heat and the tour-bus crowds. Arriving early means you have the Ancient Town almost to yourself for the first couple of hours.
Local Tip
Sue’s Tip: I can take you to a small riverside restaurant that has been serving Cao Lau for three generations — not on any tourist map, but always full of locals.

Best Time to Visit
February to April is peak season — dry, cool, and perfect. May to August is warm but manageable. September to November is the rainy season, but Hoi An in the rain has its own moody charm (and far fewer tourists). Avoid visiting during Typhoon season (October–November) if you have a fixed itinerary.
How to Make the Most of Your Day
A full day is ideal. If you only have half a day, focus on the Ancient Town in the morning and eat lunch at a riverside restaurant before heading back. If you have more time, combine Hoi An with a stop at the My Son Sanctuary (Cham ruins) on the way back to Da Nang — I can arrange the full route for you.
